Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace

On our way back from Georgia we stopped at the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln in Sinking Spring, Kentucky about 15 minutes off the highway. We all really enjoyed the stop and the peaceful feeling that was there. There was a memorial building that was built in 1909, cornerstone laid by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt and was dedicated in 1911 by Pres. Taft. Inside the memorial building a a log cabin from the area and time period as Abe Lincoln. There are 56 stairs leading up to the building. representing Abraham's 56 years of life.

Right next to the stairs of the memorial is the sinking spring.

The best part of being there was Robby and Nathan, these little boys love to stop and pick up every stick and rock. As we were walking it reminded me of the simple pleasure in life. I pictured little Abe walking and picking up rocks and being happy just like my boys.

When Abraham was just 2 his family moved to Knob Creek about 15 minutes north east. We weren't as impressed, as there wasn't really anything there but it was still good to see. This is where Abraham lived from 2 until 12 when they moved to Indiana. They have this old tavern, made from log cabins from neighbors of the Lincolns that was made after Lincoln became President, a way for the neighbors to make some money off his fame.

Abraham Lincoln tells about a time when the flood waters were high and he nearly drowned in this creek, a neighbor boy was with him and saved him.

We've been so blessed to be able to visit places our fore fathers have been. Visiting Sinking Spring is one of my favorite memories. I'm so glad we stopped!
