Too Close for Comfort

We were awakened at 2 am to really loud thunder, nothing unusual, but then there was a big crack! The apartment shook, our fire alarms went off, lights spontaneously turned themselves on for a few seconds, and there appeared to be blue light flashing around inside our apartment.

We had all been awake in our beds from the thunder, then when we heard the crack we all immediately jumped out of bed. Jenette grabbed Nathan, I ran to Robby and Tracy's room. Tracy was screaming so loud, like in a horror movie. We thought that the lightning hit our apartment! We looked around and couldn't find any damage, other than the bathroom lights and fan didn't work. Then I smelled smoke, looked out the window and saw it was the duplex behind us that was struck no more than 100 feet away from Robby's bedroom! Very Scary! Tracy and Robby spent the rest of the night in our room.

Flames were coming from the holes in the roof and there was a lot of smoke. The picture is from this morning. It's not the best picture, and the two big holes in the roof are covered with tarps, but you get an idea of some of the damage. We don't think anyone was hurt as we saw them moving there stuff out this evening.

It was completely random, it wasn't even the tallest house.

Yeah, we have storms all the time. We get tornado warnings a lot, just on the radio though, we haven't had the sirens go off while we have lived here. They get flash flood warnings a lot too. This wasn't the first time lightning has been close to us but definatly the closest. Needless to say, we can't wait to move back out west! Storms here are way more intense.

Wow.That was right next to you!! Isn't your apartment taller? Such a blessing that it wasn't your place. Glad everyone's ok.
