Since we have been home from Christmas break Robby has had a
VERY hard time adjusting back to his sleep schedule/routine. It's really hard for us because he was SO good about bed time for a long time, he used to play in his bed then fall asleep listening to his lullaby music.
WELL since being back he wakes every morning at 3:30 and other various times. For the first week back he would not go back to sleep no matter what! He is doing a little better now, he has slept through the night twice last week. Falling asleep is a lot harder for him now, sometimes we just have to leave and hold the door shut, which is really hard on us. He hasn't cried more than 10 minutes and he always climbs back in bed. But it's so heart breaking to hear him! So anyways, these are some of the things we have been doing to help him:

His night time chart. We have pictures in order of his routine, including "mommy and daddy go to their big bed and go night night, and they will get Robby when it's morning." If he has a fairly good night we give him a sticker, which he gets really excited about.
We had rented several night time books from the library. He really likes the one where the kid moved to a big boy bed and says that he's brave because he's a "muscle boy." I love how Robby shows his muscles. In the morning when we give him his sticker he always says, "yeah, muscle boy!" He also likes the book about my OWN bed. We're hoping he gets this night time thing figured out soon...we need sleep before Nathan comes! Now nap time is a whole other story, that we won't go into.

i'M SORRY BEDTIME HAS BECOME SUCH A HASTLE. WE WENT THROUGH A LOT WITH YOUR OLDEST BROTHER. WE HAD TO FIX HIS DOOR SO IT WOULDN'T OPEN. BUT HE CRIED FOR HOURS FOR MANY MONTHS. I HAVE EMPATHY FOR YOU, I WIHSED I HAD AN ANSWER.
This age is so tough! William has good nights and bad nights. We have to let him cry sometimes too. Like you, we always wait 10 minutes, and he's usually back to sleep in 5 or less. But if he wakes up again within and hour we go in just in case he's not sick or something. I'm not sure if that's the right way or not, but oh well. This age is soooo tough!! And it doesn't help going on vacation to a place in a different time zone. Like Grandpa Larry, I feel for you too!!
